Furnace Maintenance in Minnesota: 5 Things to Check Before Winter

We all know how Minnesota winters work. One day you're enjoying the fall weather with the windows open, and the next you're digging out your winter coat and wondering why you haven't turned the furnace on yet.

And while it's tempting to just turn up the thermostat, cross your fingers, and hope for the best, your furnace might have other plans.

The last thing anyone wants is to wake up to a freezing house in the middle of January. Especially when a little attention now could have helped prevent the problem.

The good news? Getting your furnace ready for winter doesn't have to be complicated or expensive.

Here are five simple things every Minnesota homeowner should do before the real cold arrives.

1. Check That Furnace Filter (Yes, Again!)

We know. Nobody gets excited about changing a furnace filter.

But that little filter has a pretty important job.

When it's packed with dust and dirt, your furnace has a harder time moving warm air through your home. That can mean less comfort, higher energy use, and extra strain on your equipment.

Here's what to do:

  • Check your filter every month during heating season.

  • Replace it when it's dirty or according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Make sure you're using the correct size and type for your system.

A good rule of thumb is to check it monthly, even if the package says it lasts 90 days. Homes with pets, lots of dust, or heavy furnace use may need more frequent changes.

It's a small job that can save you a bigger headache later.

2. Give Your Furnace a Test Run Before You Actually Need It

Don't wait until it's 10 degrees outside to find out your furnace isn't working.

Turn your thermostat to heat, raise the temperature a few degrees, and make sure everything starts up like it should.

Pay attention to anything unusual:

  • Is the furnace making a noise you haven't heard before?

  • Does it keep turning on and off?

  • Are some rooms staying cold?

Those are things worth checking out before winter settles in.

3. Make Sure Your Carbon Monoxide Alarms Are Working

This one isn't just about comfort. It's about keeping your family safe.

Gas furnaces and other fuel-burning appliances can produce carbon monoxide (CO) if something goes wrong. Carbon monoxide has no smell or color, which means you can't count on your senses to warn you.

Minnesota law requires working CO alarms within 10 feet of rooms legally used for sleeping.

Take a few minutes to test your alarms, check their expiration dates, and replace any that are past their useful life.

And remember, a carbon monoxide alarm is not a substitute for having your furnace inspected. You want both.

4. Make Sure Your Furnace Can Breathe

Your furnace needs proper airflow to heat your home safely and efficiently.

Walk through your house and check that your heating vents aren't covered by furniture, rugs, or other household items.

If you have a high-efficiency furnace with intake and exhaust pipes outside, make sure those openings are clear of leaves, snow, and ice.

And while you're at it, keep boxes, cleaning supplies, and other stored items away from your furnace.

Your furnace doesn't need its own fancy room. It just needs enough space and airflow to do its job.

5. Schedule a Furnace Tune-Up Before Something Goes Wrong

Here's something we tell homeowners all the time:

It's much better to find out your furnace has a problem on a 50-degree day than during a Minnesota cold snap.

A yearly furnace tune-up gives a trained technician the chance to check important components, look for safety concerns, and catch signs of wear before they turn into bigger problems.

Does that mean a tune-up guarantees your furnace won't break down? Of course not.

But it can help identify issues you might never notice until the heat stops working.

And when we're talking about the equipment keeping your family warm all winter, that's worth knowing.
