Furnace Tune-Up: Our 20-Point Inspection

No guesswork. No pressure. Just honest answers.

A furnace tune-up shouldn't be a mystery. Every North State Mechanical tune-up covers 20 points across safety, efficiency, and the parts that wear out over time.

Both the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and ENERGY STAR recommend having your heating system checked by a qualified technician every year, ideally before the heating season starts. In Minnesota, that means fall.

What We Check

SAFETY CHECKS

• Gas lines: we check for leaks from the furnace shut-off valve to the burners

• Heat exchanger: inspected for safe, efficient operation

• Chimney and venting: exhaust leaves your home the way it should

• Carbon monoxide in the flue: measured to confirm clean combustion

• Gas controls and safety devices: tested to shut down if something isn't right

• Pressure switch tubing: checked for heat damage, corrosion, cracks, and blockages

• Basic safety and code issues: we flag anything that could be a concern

EFFICIENCY CHECKS

• Thermostat: reading and controlling properly

• Air filter: a clogged filter restricts airflow and raises energy use

• Airflow and ductwork: system pressure checked

• Ignition and flame: within manufacturer specs, burners cleaned if needed

• BTU input and firing rate: burning the right amount of fuel

• Temperature rise: how much your furnace heats the air

PARTS THAT WEAR OUT

• Blower motor: checked for early warning signs

• Combustion blower motor: the motor that moves exhaust out

• Motor and pump bearings: worn bearings lead to noise and failure

• Belts: on belt-driven systems, checked for wear and slipping

• Electrical connections: checked and tightened

• Condensate drain: on high-efficiency furnaces, kept clear to prevent leaks

AND POINT 20? Anything else our technician notices. If we see something worth mentioning, we'll tell you, and the decision is yours.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

When we've finished checking your system, we'll let you know what we found and whether we have any recommendations, for now or down the road. You'll receive an invoice with everything we discussed. And we never perform any work without first explaining the why and the cost, and answering all your questions, so you can make the best decision for you, your budget, and your home.

MAINTENANCE, SERVICE & INSTALLATION

A tune-up is just one part of what we do. North State Mechanical takes care of your furnace from start to finish:

• Maintenance: yearly tune-ups like the one above, or join our Maintenance Membership so you never have to remember to call.

• Service and repair: no heat, strange noises, short cycling, or a furnace that won't stay lit. We find the cause and explain your options and the cost before any work starts.

• Installation and replacement: when repairs stop making sense, we size and install a new furnace that fits your home and your budget, starting with a free estimate.

Common Questions

Q: Does a tune-up mean my furnace won't break down?

A: No one can promise that. But a tune-up gives us the chance to catch worn parts and safety concerns before they leave you without heat.

Q: My furnace is new. Do I still need a tune-up?

A: Yes. New equipment still benefits from yearly care, and some warranties ask for proof of regular maintenance.

Q: Will you try to sell me something?

A: No. We'll show you what we found and explain your options. You decide what's right for your home.
